At Daily NK, our duty is to focus on the future of North Korea.
The North Korean regime denies its 23 million citizens both human rights and a democratic government, subjecting them instead to the despair of poverty and food insecurity. Despite the almost unlimited material support North Korea could receive from the international community if it chose to pursue political reform and economic liberalization, the Kim family is blinded by its monopoly on power; as a result, it constantly threatens the peace in the wider region via provocations targeting its southern neighbor and the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction.
Simultaneously, the dynastic succession from Kim Il Sung to Kim Jong Il and now Kim Jong Eun is making a mockery of the democratic and historical progress we all support. Extreme human rights violations and the politics of fear continuously threaten the universal values that mankind has worked so hard to realize.
Hope for the North Korean people, peace on the Korean Peninsula, unification and the further development of Northeast Asia all remain distant goals when we have yet to see the systematic reform and opening of North Korea that is so badly needed.
Daily NK sees the people of North Korea as separate from their regime, and dreams of going forward with them to a time of peaceful unification based on democracy and the realization of human rights, a vehicle for mutual prosperity in Northeast Asia.
Daily NK strives to observe the following values:
1. Daily NK will defend the human rights of the North Korean people;
2. Daily NK will support the democratization of North Korea, founded on the idea that sovereignty rests with the people;
3. Daily NK will aim for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula, preconditioned upon political reform and economic opening;
4. Daily NK will seek cooperation and coexistence in Northeast Asia.
We hope that you, the readers, will continue to support our work.
Thank you.
